New River Pottery Catapults South Hills' De-Malling Ahead
New River Pottery is the newest kid on the block at South Hills Shopping Center. New River is a home décor superstore with over 44,000 square feet. This store now occupies a great deal of the old shop space and mall corridor of what use to be "South Hills Mall". With the opening of New River, South Hills ongoing "de-malling project" catapulted ahead in 2004!
A large component of "de-malling" involves rearranging various tenants and working a life size jigsaw puzzle. One main move with the New River Pottery involved the relocation of a long standing tenant, Mitchell's Hairstyling Academy.
Mitchell's had started at South Hills many years ago and was operating a 6,000 square foot academy at Center Court inside South Hills Mall. While New River needed Mitchell's space for their store, Mitchell's also had been contemplating how to rent more space as well. The result was a classic "win-win" as Martin relocated Mitchell's to The Plaza at South Hills which allowed them to expand to 8,000 square feet and re-invent their entire operation with their new state of the art academy!
